Top 10 Tourist Attractions in Vietnam

Top 10 Attractions in Vietnam

Most travelers to Vietnam are attracted by the country’s wonderful natural beauty: From the green rice fields in the north to the fascinating bustle of the Mekong Delta in the south. Vietnam however is also a country with a long history and ancient traditions. It has many historic attractions and old temples. An overview of the most amazing tourist attractions in Vietnam.

1. Nha Trang

Nha Trang is Vietnam’s most popular seaside resort town located along the second most beautiful bays in the country. It features beautiful beaches with fine and clean sand and clear ocean water with mild temperatures. The city has about 300,000 inhabitants and is more lively and urban in character than other beach destinations like Mui Ne and Phu Quoc. It’s also the scuba diving center of Vietnam.

2. Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels are an immense network of connecting underground tunnels located about 40 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). The tunnels were used by Viet Cong guerrillas as hiding spots during the Vietnam War, and were the base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968. The tunnels have become a popular tourist attraction, and visitors are invited to crawl around in the safer parts of the tunnel system.

3. Mekong River (Mekong Delta)

The Mekong Delta is the region in southern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea. It is a very rich and lush area, covered with rice fields, that produces about half of the total of Vietnam’s agricultural output. Subsequently, life in the Mekong Delta revolves much around the river, and all the villages are often accessible by river rather than by road.

4. Mui Ne - Phan Thiet

The formerly little-inhabited beach south of the fishing village of Mui Ne has seen some serious development in the last 15 years. Due to strong sea breezes it is a popular destination in Vietnam for kite- and windsurfing. No trip to Mui Ne is complete without a trip to the famous sand dunes located a short distance north of the town. The vast sandy expanse provide some great panoramic views especially during sunset.

5. Sapa Terraces

Sapa is a town in northwest Vietnam not far from the Chinese border. Rice terraces can be found in the Muong Hoa valley between Sa Pa town and the Fansipan Mountain, on a backdrop of thick bamboo woodlands. Local mountain people, the Hmong, Giay, Dao, Tay, and Giay, grow rice and corn on these paddy terraces, along with vegetables.

6. Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

Located in front of the Cambodia coast, Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam. Phu Quoc is what Phuket would be if it hadn’t been overrun by development. The island features pristine tropical forests, undamaged coral reefs and great beaches. One of its beaches, named Bai Dai (Long Beach), was chosen by the ABC News as one of five beautiful and clean beaches. Phu Quoc is famous for producing the best nuoc mam or fermented fish sauce in the world.

7. Hoi An

Hoi An Ancient Town, Vietnam

This fishing-village-turned-tourist-attraction is situated on the coast of the South China Sea. Hoi An has been an international port from the 16th century although the serious shipping business has long since moved to the city of Da Nang. The heart of the city is still the Old Town, full of winding lanes and Chinese-styled shops. It is sometimes called the “Venice of Vietnam” because of the narrow canals that cut through part of the town.

8. Hoan Kiem Lake - Hanoi

Located in the historical center of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake is one of the major scenic spots in the city and serves as the locals’ favorite leisure spot. Hoan Kiem means “returned sword”, and the name comes from a legend in which King Le Loi was given a magical sword by the gods, which he used to drive out the invading Chinese. Later he returned the sword to the Golden Turtle God in the lake.

9. Thien Mu Pagoda - Hue

With seven stories, the Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue is the tallest pagoda in Vietnam. The pagoda overlooks the Perfume River and is regarded as the unofficial symbol of the former imperial capital. The temple was built in 1601 during the rule of the Nguyễn Lords. The initial temple was very simply constructed, but over time it was redeveloped and expanded with more intricate features.

10. Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Ha Long Bay is situated in north Vietnam round a 120 kilometer long coast line and is literally translated as “Bay of Descending Dragons”. The top tourist attraction in Vietnam, Ha Long Bay features thousands of islands, each topped with thick jungle vegetation, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars. Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves, others islands include lakes and some support floating villages of fishermen./.

Top 5 Travel Tips for Vietnam

Vietnam Travel Tips

Vietnam had been on our travel wish-list for some time, not only because it was where Hai was born but because almost every traveler we met raved about it, and we can understand why. We spent three weeks traveling from the south to the north. It’s do-able but we’d recommend a month if you have it to cover the long distances and account for delays. Here are our top picks from our time in this wonderfully chaotic and colorful nation.

1. Go South

Delicious food Vietnam in Mekong Delta

Delicious food Vietnam

The Mekong Delta region is worth the trip south from Ho Chi Minh City. Not only is there a super-relaxed vibe, but you’ll eat some of the most delicious food Vietnam has to offer, the kind that makes you want to lick your plate clean or slurp every last mouthful of broth from your finished noodle soup. Don’t even get me started on the coffee: hands down the best we tasted in the country.

2. Get to know Vietnam’s war history from the Vietnamese perspective

Cu Chi Tunnels, Vietnam

Cu Chi Tunnels, Vietnam

Vietnam is much more than a war, but you can’t put what you experience in the country into context without knowing something about it. And there are many opportunities to get in touch with Vietnam’s war past.

While it is super touristy and you’ll be herded around like cattle, take a tour of the Củ Chi tunnels on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City to experience the underground guerrilla network for yourself. Crawling through the hot and narrow tunnels will give you a momentary sense of what conditions must have been like during conflict. Then learn more about the Vietnam War and the effects of Agent Orange at Ho Chi Minh’s War Remnants Museum. It’s not an easy visit, but you’ll come out humbled about the gravity of war and its ongoing legacy. Most Củ Chi tunnel tours swing by the War Remnants Museum on the way back for those who’d like to make it a full day outing.

3. Get a bus from your bus

Bus services in Vietnam

Bus services in Vietnam

Most bus companies operate a free shuttle service from bus stations to your hotel in town. They are usually unmarked and unpublicized to foreigners so that the taxi services inevitably waiting for you as soon as you step out of the bus can make their dong out of you. Watch the locals and follow their lead. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the buses/vans to come, so don’t be put off by the empty bus station and save yourself a most likely inflated trip into town.

4. Take a free walking tour in Hanoi

Hanoi Old Quarter Beer

Want to experience the capital from a local’s perspective without paying for and joining a tour group? Then check out Hanoi Free Walking Tours. They are a student-run organization who provide free English guiding services around the city. While they have some itineraries on their website, these are just as some inspiration. You can go wherever you like for a full or half day depending on your interests. You’ll just need to cover the costs of the student(s) - admission fees, lunch etc and any tips you may want to give. The tour is always private even if you are a solo traveler so you can be sure to have a very personalized experience and lots of interaction with your new friend(s).

5. Whatever you do, get to Sapa

Sapa Vietnam in September Weather

Sapa Vietnam in September Weather

Sapa is not only one of the most spectacular places you will ever see, but it is so different to other parts of Vietnam that you won’t have truly experienced all that the country has to offer without going here. Go straight to the locals for a true village homestay experience and we promise you won’t regret it./.

A perfect trip to Vietnam - Highlights of each area

Highlights of Vietnam

From the island-studded seas of the north to the meandering waterways of the south, Vietnam is a country defined by the diversity of its land and the resilience and generosity of its people. Lonely Planet Traveller magazine shows you how to take the perfect trip to Vietnam.

Halong Bay: Best for coast

Sunset in Halong Bay, Vietnam
Sunset in Halong Bay, Vietnam

The mystical landscape of Halong Bay, where over 2000 limestone islets rise from the Gulf of Tonkin.

Once upon a time, a friendly dragon lived in the heavens above Halong Bay. With invaders from the seas threatening Vietnam, the gods asked the dragon to create a natural barrier to protect its people. The dragon kindly obliged, performing a spectacular crash landing along the coast – digging up chunks of rock with its flailing tail and spitting out pearls - before grinding to a halt. This scene of devastation is now known as Halong Bay - Halong literally translates as "where the dragon descends into the sea".

Less exciting explanations of this landscape involve eons of erosion by winds and waves – but nobody disputes the splendour of the end result. Rising from the shallows of the Gulf of Tonkin are thousands of limestone islands – towering monoliths lined up like dominoes, some teetering at worrying angles. The islands’ names testify to the overactive imaginations of sailors who’ve spent too long at sea – Fighting Cock Island, Finger Island, Virgin Grotto. Having largely resisted human settlement, the islands have become home to other creatures. From above, sea eagles swoop down to pluck fish from the waters, carrying their prey – still flapping – high into the air, and squawking congratulations to each other from their nests.

Hanoi: Best for city life

Cyclo trip to discover Hanoi Old Quarter
Cyclo trip to discover Hanoi Old Quarter

It’s rush hour in Hanoi, and the streets of the city’s Old Quarter throng with hundreds of scooters. The pavement and the central reservation are fair game in the chaos; zebra crossings exist more as a personal challenge than a guarantee of safe passage. Hanoi is a city that refuses to grow old gracefully - a millennium-old capital of crumbling pagodas and labyrinthine streets, now undergoing a werewolf-like transformation into a 21st-century Asian metropolis. In the Old Quarter, ancient temples now neighbour karaoke joints, and dynasties of artisans ply their trade next to shops selling cuddly toys the size of grizzly bears.

Few have studied the changing face of the city as closely as Do Hien, an artist who has spent a lifetime painting Hanoi’s streets. He welcomes me to his studio, and idly leafs through sketches of city life – couples waltzing beside the willows of Hoan Kiem Lake, and alleyways where hawkers prepare steaming bowls of pho. ‘Hanoi is a place that runs in your blood,’ Hien says thoughtfully, sitting cross-legged among stubs of incense sticks and paintbrushes strewn across his studio floor. "Had I not lived in this city I might not be able to paint like I do".

Sapa: Best for walking

Sapa, Vietnam
Sapa, Vietnam

An evening fog hangs over Sapa. Clouds sporadically open up a bit to reveal a village, a chunk of a mountain, a patch of jungle, before obscuring them from view again, like stage scenery sliding into the wings. Eventually the clouds lift, and the Hoang Lien mountain range emerges. It is a landscape of extraordinary beauty – the Asian highlands half-remembered from childhood picture books and martial-arts films. Above are peaks thick to their summits with greenery. Below, rice terraces run down the hillsides at right angles, as neatly as the folds in origami paper.

Sapa is a town where the weather seems to operate on random rotation – switching between brilliant sunshine, thick fog, driving rain and occasionally a dusting of snow, before coming full circle to brilliant sunshine, often all within the space of a few minutes. A hill station settled by Vietnam’s French colonists, Sapa now serves as a trailhead for hikers happy to run the meteorological lottery of a walk in these mountains. ‘We have four seasons in one day here,’ explains Giang Thi Mo, my guide, shimmying along the edge of a rice paddy as a rain cloud approaches. "There’s no way to predict the weather - just be lucky!"

Sapa in September, Vietnam

We pass through a village, and Mo points to bamboo irrigation systems that send trickles down the hillsides and into rice pounders that see-saw with the current. "There’s a Hmong saying that we flow with the water", she explains. "It means we don’t worry too much, and take things easy".

Hoi An: Best for food

Hoi An Street Food
Hoi An Street Food

Hoi An is a small town that likes a big breakfast. As dawn musters strength on the horizon, a small army of chefs sets to work on Thai Phien street - firing up gas cookers and arranging plastic furniture on the pavements. Soon, the city awakes to sweet porridges; coffee that sends a lightning bolt of caffeine to sleepy heads; sizzling steaks; broths that swim with turmeric, chilli and ginger. In Vietnam, street food is a serious business – a single dish prepared day after day by the same cook, perfected and honed by a lifetime’s craft.

Hoi An Street
Hoi An Street

"Food in Hoi An is about yin and yang", explains Le Hanh, a young female chef scrutinising vegetables at the morning market. "It’s about balancing hot with cool, sweet with sour, salty with spicy". True to Hanh’s philosophy, cooking in Hoi An goes big on contrasting flavours; food that plays good cop/bad cop with the palate. The sharpness of fish sauce blends with the subtlety of fresh herbs; cool lemongrass makes way for the eye-watering panic of accidentally chomping on a red chilli.

Mekong Delta: Best for river life

Floating markets - Mekong Vietnam
Floating markets - Mekong Vietnam

A heavy rain is falling on the Mekong Delta, flooding the footpaths, swilling in the gutters, turning riverbank mud from light tan to a rich coffee colour. A tangled network of rivers, tributaries and canals, the waters of the delta criss-cross the lowlands of southern Vietnam, before emptying out into the South China Sea through mighty, yawning estuaries. For centuries, life here has ebbed and flowed in tandem with the current of the Mekong – an all-in-one launderette, bathtub, highway, toilet, dishwasher, larder, social club and workplace for the communities surrounded by its waters.

"If you live on a river island with twenty other people you have to learn to get along with everyone", explains Mrs Bui Nguyen, beckoning strangers to shelter in her bungalow beside the Cai Chanh canal. ‘That’s the reason why people in the Mekong are so friendly!’ A 77-year-old who attributes her longevity to a lifetime avoiding doctors, Mrs Nguyen wistfully reflects on the delta of old - in days when the only artificial light came from peanut oil lamps dotted along the riverbanks; an age long before roads had reached the villages. Times have changed. However, human life still instinctively congregates on the water’s edge. Lining the riverbank nearby are grocers’ shops, cafés, a gym, a billiards club and a blacksmith’s. Floating markets, too, are still held every morning at nearby Cai Rang - with creaking barges from across the delta bashing into each other as they offload cargoes of watermelons, pineapples and turnips.

Cai Be Floating Market - Mekong Vietnam

Floating Market in South of Vietnam

Cai Be - a charming town which is only 2 hour drive by car from Saigon, makes it a much preferable tourist draw. It has long been famous with the floating market where visitors can soak up in the uproarious atmosphere of lively market. Unfortunately, Cai Be floating market is getting less bustling since the trade is shifting more to land-based market.

Cai Be Floating Market, Mekong Vietnam

Cai Be Floating Market, Mekong Vietnam

Since the infrastructure has significantly been improved lately, the trade is gradually shifted to the island where fruits buyers can easily access to local gardens and buy directly from them. Therefore, the floating market may not be busy as you expected. Moreover, since the floating market is wholesales market that distribute to different places such as Saigon, Hanoi. Hence, the road transportation is preferred to keep the quality of the fruits.

Cai Be and around

Mekong cycling

Despite the fact that it’s less hectic every year, the remainder of authenticity of a local market is still something to appreciate. One thing that I love about floating market in Mekong is that you don’t have to worry about being push to buy or being ripped off. The floating market is wholesales so nobody tries to sell you anything, hence, making you feel a little local and have time to contemplate and learn about their daily lives.

Cai Be Floating Market

Cai Be Floating Market

It doesn’t mean it’s any less fun in Cai Be where you can combine other activities such as taking sampan ride along canal. For us, cycling is the exciting way to explore Mekong region where you can ride around the island, visit fruit orchards and taste delicious tropical fruits while enjoying the trees cast their shadow on the ground.

Visit fruit orchards

Visit fruit orchards

Mekong region is home to cultures and customs which are totally different from the West. so why not spend the night at a homestay in Can Tho? Waking up by the early-morning sound of the country or the sampan’s engine of locals, you join your host, get up close and personal to locals in areas less accustomed to foreign visitors. Thus, you can embark on the beauty of culture differences with various activities such as gardening, fishing and cooking traditional foods.

Other floating markets

Chau Doc - Other floating markets, Vietnam

Don’t miss the chance to visit another Mekong’s highlight which is Cai Rang floating market if you plan to stay for a night. Wake up early for the market to tak in the sunrise view from your boat and join the river traffic filled with chock-full of big and small boats because Cai Rang is more hectic compared to Cai Be.

Close to the Cambodian border, Chau Doc is also a colourful floating market that is worth a visit. If you’ve managed to get this far through the delta, you can visit the area around Chau Doc, including Cham community Sam Mountain before venturing to Phnom Penh./.

21 Things To Do In Cambodia

21 things to Do - must see places and activities in Cambodia

1. CATCH A TUK TUK

Tuk Tuk Service in Cambodia
Tuk Tuk Service in Cambodia

I’m going to say it- Cambodia has probably the world’s best tuk tuks. They’re essentially little cushioned chariots pulled around by a guy on a motorbike. Tuk tuks give you a chance to sit back, relax and take in the view of bustling street scape of little ole Cambodian. Plus it’s much cooler than walking.

2. HAVE A DRINK (OR 4) AT THE FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT’S CLUB

Foreign Correspondents Club in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Drink at the FCC in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The FCC in Phnom Penh sits on the river bank and looks out at the mighty Mekong River. Sitting on the FCC balcony at the end of a stinking hot day (which is most days) is the perfect way to cool off and unwind. It also helps that drinks are cold, strong and half price everyday 5-7pm. They also serve food which is pretty tasty.

3. VISIT RABBIT ISLAND

Rabbit Island Beach in Kep, Cambodia
Rabbit Island Beach in Kep, Cambodia

Rabbit Island (or Tonsai Island) is a tiny island off the coast of Cambodia. The island is covered in thick jungle and has quiet sandy beaches, lined with coconut trees and hammocks. You can stay in a bungalow on the beach from just $7. If you’re looking for an almost untouched island get away where no one will hear you scream- this is the place for you. Boats leave the Kep pier everyday- rain, hail or shine.

4. EAT CRAB AT KEP

Kep Crab Cambodia
Kep Crab Cambodia

Kep is on the coast of Cambodia, about a 4 hour drive from Phnom Penh, an is famous for it’s crab. The crab is so fresh that when ordering crab at one of the restaurants along the shore, you can often see staff wading into the water to fish out a crab from one of their many traps bobbing away in the ocean. Now that is fresssssssssh. This is one of Ryan’s favourite things to do in Cambodia.

5. VISIT SAKURA JAPANESE THRIFT STORE

Sakura Japanese Thrift Store in Cambodia
Sakura Japanese Thrift Store in Cambodia

This might not be for everyone, but for those who love a bargain or are into vintage clothes, Sakura Thrift Store is amazing. I’ve seen a few of these shops hidden around both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. They’re great for finding interesting (and sometimes designer) clothes, bags and shoes and the best thing is that things are cheap, cheap, cheap. There are plenty of clothes for $0.25 USD.

6. EAT AMOK

Amok - Best food in Cambdoia
Amok - Best food in Cambdoia

Amok is a traditional Kmher curry made with meat or fish, lemon grass and coconut milk (and some other delicious mystery ingredients). It’s often served in a coconut with rice and is t-a-s-t-y.

7. VISIT ANGKOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK

Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia
Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia

This may seem pretty obvious as one of the things to do in Cambodia - Angkor Archaeological Park is Cambodia’s #1 tourist attraction and money maker, but it had to be said. The park is just outside Siem Reap and is home to dozens of ancient temple ruins. Grab a guide (you’ll learn more) and a tuk tuk and get ready for a hot sweaty day of temple lovin’. You can also see the temples via elephant or helicopter if that’s you’re that way inclined.

8. VISIT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM IN PHNOM PENH

National Museum of Arts in Phnom Penh - Cambodia
National Museum of Arts in Phnom Penh - Cambodia

The National Museum is filled with hundreds of ancient statues and sculptures that were taken from the Angkor Temples to be protected from the sticky fingers of looters and scavengers. The building itself is amazing and there’s a pretty sweet garden and fish pond in the middle. Good to spend a few hours, especially if you’re planning on visiting the Archaeological Park.

9. HIT THE BEACH AT SIHNOUKVILLE

Koh Rong Samloem, Sihnoukville, Cambodia
Koh Rong Samloem, Sihnoukville, Cambodia

Sihnoukville is not Thailand. The sand is not white, the water is not turquoise and Leonardo DiCaprio is not here. But despite this, it’s still pretty good. The beaches are clean and lined with lounges and restaurants waiting to feed you while you sun yourself and sip fruity drinks. You can also hop on a boat and visit some islands and go snorkeling etc.

10. HAVE A MASSAGE ON THE BEACH

Massage on the Beach, Cambodia
Massage on the Beach, Cambodia

At the few beaches available in Cambodia, there are always locals waiting to paint your nails, thread your legs and armpits (like plucking but with string) or give you a massage – all for a price of course. The touts constantly pestering you can get a bit too much, so sometimes giving in and just getting that $3 massage is the best option. Avoid paying the kids though- they should be in school.

11. EAT TARANTULA

Spicy Fried Tarantulas in Cambodia
Spicy Fried Tarantulas in Cambodia

Fried Tarantula, or a-ping, is a Cambodian favourite. The ladies believe it makes them beautiful and I think the kids just like the thrill of it all. Either way it’s there and you can eat it. You can find some vendors selling it on the streets and also in some restaurants in Phnom Penh. This might not be one of my favourite things to do in Cambodia, but hey, it might be yours.

12. VISIT THE FRIENDS SHOP AND RESTAURANTS IN PHNOM PENH

Friends international, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Friends international, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Cambodia has so many NGOs helping those in need and getting this country back in the game. Just one of them is Friends International who help street children, their families and communities. One of their initiatives is to train students for the food service industry and employ them in their restaurants around Phnom Penh. Students also create products and artwork using recycled materials and sell them in the Friends shops. NOTE: There’s plenty of these NGOs around town so do some research and find and visit one that takes your fancy.

13. CATCH A GIANT IBIS BUS

Bus Service in Cambodia
Bus Service in Cambodia

To get to many places around Cambodia the only option is to catch a bus, especially if you don’t want to pay $150 for a 30min flight. Most bus companies are mediocre but I’m happy to say there’s a new kid in town. Giant Ibis Bus Service is a new luxury bus company. The buses are new, spacious, clean, have free wifi and there’s no karaoke in sight. The bus drivers seem like they don’t have a death wish and it’s rumoured they may even hold drivers licenses. All this must be pretty pricey right? Wrong. You can travel in style for just $1 more than any other bus company. Now that’s a bargain in anyone’s books.

14. GO TO THE FISH DOCTOR

Massage and a Fish Pedicure in Siem Reap, Cambodia
Massage and a Fish Pedicure in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Basically there’s a giant tub filled with fish. You put your feet in and they nibble off the dead skin. Gross, I know. Some people are into it though. But if you don’t like your feet being gently nibbled by fish you only just met, I’d give it a miss. Or have a glass of wine or two first and see how things go.

15. VISIT THE CENTRAL MARKET IN PHNOM PENH

Central market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Central market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

There are markets all over this country but the Central Market ( Psah Thom Thmey) in Phnom Penh is particularly special. It’s in the central part of town (duh) and is housed in a stunning art deco building built in the 1930s. The building itself arches up, allowing plenty of breathing room for those scavenging for bargains at the markets below.

16. VISIT THE S21 MUSEUM (TUOL SLENG GENOCIDE MUSEUM)

S21 Museum (Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum)
S21 Museum (Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum)

S21 was once a school that was transformed into a prison and torture chamber by the Khmer Rouge. The site hasn’t changed all that much and is definitely very eery. Take tissues.

17. VISIT THE KILLING FIELDS

The Killing Tree in Choeung Ek Killing Fields, Cambodia
The Killing Tree in Choeung Ek Killing Fields, Cambodia

The Killing Fields are about 30kms out of town. This is where the Khmer Rough killed and buried 100s of 1000s of Cambodian people. It’s now a memorial site that you can wander around and learn about via the audio guide. Take more tissues.

18. GET A MASSAGE FROM SEEING HANDS MASSAGE

Cambodia The Blind Masseuses - Seeing Hands Massage
Cambodia The Blind Masseuses - Seeing Hands Massage

This massage parlor down a tiny dirt road near the night market in Siem Reap is a little different. All the masseuses are blind and trained in Shiatsu and Reflexology. This is a great way to directly support the community (and get a sweet massage while you’re at it!).

19. GO THE THE FLICKS

The Flicks Movie House in Phnom Penh
The Flicks Movie House in Phnom Penh

The Flicks Community Movie House is a movie cinema in Phnom Penh with a difference. Instead of blockbusters being blasted out on mega screens, the Flicks offer a casual alternative. Showing a wide range of old and new films for up to 32 people, the Flicks is more like snuggling up and watching a film at a friends house while you have a few drinks.

20. VISIT LAKE TONLE SAP

Floating village at Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia
Floating village at Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia

Lake Tonle Sap is a short drive from Siem Reap and is SE Asia’s largest fresh water lake. It provides half of the fish consumed in Cambodia and is filled with floating villages, huge bird colonies and an even bigger water snake population- over 4 million are caught there very year. Yuk.

21. VISIT ORUSSEY MARKET

Orussey Market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Orussey Market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Orussey Market near the centre of Phnom Penh is a hive of activity where locals go to buy anything from hardware to dried fish and everything in between. This is an indoor market with several levels jam packed with hundreds of stalls and is like a hot and steamy rabbit warren. Orussey is an authentic locals market, so if you’re looking to wheel and deal and survive to tell the tale, perhaps it’s best if you venture in with the support of a Cambodian friend. Good luck.

11 Best Vietnam Experiences

Vietnam Travel Blog: 11 Best Vietnam Experiences

1. Visit a Remote Ethnic Market

Bac Ha Sunday Market and Sapa Tribes

Bac Ha Sunday Market and Sapa Tribes, Vietnam

In Vietnam's northern highlands, ethnic tribes descend from the mountains every week, tramping for miles to sell a water buffalo, haggle over medicinal herbs or bargain for pineapples not much bigger than your fist. At Tuesday’s Coc Ly market, members of the Flower Hmong ethnic group turn out in all their finery with babies lolling on their backs in intricately embroidered slings. The bold colors of their traditional costumes glow even brighter once you've sampled a sip of fiery rice whiskey, sold from a gasoline can. Come away with an armful of tangerines, a traditional collar stitched from hundreds of tiny cloth strips or the memory of a shy child's smile.

It's best to go with a guide who can speak the local dialect, like one from Palmvietnamtravel.com, which offers custom private tours. The market takes place in the morning and lasts until about noon. Coc Ly is 62 miles from Sapa, a popular place to stay, and 37 miles from Lao Cai, which is the hub for overnight express trains from Hanoi. If you can afford it, book a private cabin on one of the more luxurious private rail cars, like those operated by Victoria Hotels.

2. Kayak Among Mist-Shrouded Islands

Cat Ba Island, Halong Bay, Vietnam

Cat Ba Island, Halong Bay, Vietnam

The limestone karst islands of Halong Bay are legendary. Unfortunately, so are the hordes of tour boats. Get away from the crowd and closer to the fantastical formations in a kayak. You'll need to work with a tour company; the islands are just too far away to kayak directly from land.

Companies focused on kayaking trips will take you out in escort boats and set you up where the paddling's perfect. Guides help you explore caves and rock gardens. Day trips are possible from some companies, but consider spending a night on the bay to get the full experience of light and mist around these magical islands. Escort boats have sleeping accommodations with varying levels of luxury, depending on your budget.

Asia Outdoors offers day trips from Cat Ba Island that visit the less crowded southern part of Halong Bay, known as Lan Ha Bay. These tours are a nice option if you're spending a couple of days on laid-back Cat Ba.

3. Dine Like an Emperor on Imperial Cuisine

Hue royal cuisine, Vietnam

Hue royal cuisine, Vietnam

Talk about living large! According to tales from Vietnam's imperial era, the 19th-century Nguyen kings never dined on the same meal twice in a single year. Ensconced in Hue's Citadel, they had a bevy of chefs, each of whom specialized in just one dish. To keep the royal palate from getting bored, 50 exquisite little courses were served at dinner, but special banquets could include as many as 300 dishes. Fruits and vegetables were carved into fanciful animals, flowers and landscapes to decorate the plates.

Remnants of that imperial cuisine have crept into commoners' food. You'll find modest restaurants serving a raft of tiny steamed rice-flour dumplings with dried shrimp and pork, set in petite dishes (banh beo) or bundled in banana leaves (banh lam or banh nam). The crispy pancake, banh khoai, wrapped around pork, shrimp and bean sprouts is worth a try, as is the city's renowned spicy noodle soup, bun bo. Fare at fancier restaurants is more elaborate, with table decor that might include a phoenix sculpted from a pineapple.

It's rare to find Hue's imperial cuisine outside this UNESCO World Heritage Site, so take advantage of it while you're here. You'll find dumplings in the stalls at Dong Ba Market (worth a visit to take in the bustling ambience, too), as well as bargain spot Lien Hoa (3 Le Quy Don) and other places around town. For more upscale dining, try Ancient Hue (AncientHue.com.vn), set in a series of old houses, or Tinh Gia Vien (Le Thanh Ton), where artistry tends to outshine the flavors.

4. Cycle the Mekong Delta

Mekong Delta Cycling Tour, Vietnam

Mekong Delta Cycling Tour, Vietnam

The Mekong Delta is a paradise for cyclers: flat and scenic, with vistas of rice paddies, canals, fruit orchards and jungle. Specialist outfits like Cycling Vietnam (CyclingVietnam.net) offer trips of varying length, mixing biking with visits to traditional homes, floating markets and ethnic villages.

You'll likely ride along the Mekong River for at least part of the trip, and most organizers also include a boat trip on the river. One of the nicest features is the opportunity to connect with locals, whom you'll encounter riding bikes too. Tours usually include pick-up and return to Ho Chi Minh City, but if you're heading on to Cambodia, you might want to arrange for your trip to end in Chau Doc, where you can take a fast boat upriver to Phnom Penh.

5. Stalk Rare Birds in Cat Tien National Park

Cat Tien National Park, Vietnam

Cat Tien National Park, Vietnam

The nearly 300 square miles of Cat Tien National Park are listed by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve Zone, and are the perfect place to explore if you're a nature lover. The park, located about 90 miles north of Ho Chi Minh City, is a birder's paradise, home to 348 species, including pitta, Siamese firebacks, red junglefowl and green peafowl. There are hundreds of different types of butterflies and 79 species of reptiles, including pythons and crocodiles. Leopards, tigers and Asiatic black bears are also reported to live here, but chances of spotting one are rare. You'll have a better chance of sighting gibbons, macaques, civets and deer. Sadly, in 2011, the highly endangered Javanese rhinoceros was declared extinct in the park.

If traveling on your own, hire a guide at the park's information counter (just be sure you can communicate) or join activities like a night safari or gibbon trek. You can hike to Crocodile Lake for a rustic overnight, or sleep with more luxury at the Forest Floor Lodge and other accommodations on the park's perimeter.

The park allows a limited number of visitors per day, so if you're traveling on your own, phone ahead for reservations.

6. See a Wet and Wild Water Puppet Show

Vietnam Water Puppets Show

Vietnam Water Puppets Show

Sure, it might sound like a kids' activity, but don't miss a show at Hanoi's Thang Long Water Puppetry Theatre. In a tradition that dates back 1,000 years, the "stage" is actually the surface of a tank filled with water. The unseen puppeteers operate their puppets from behind a curtain, standing waist-deep. The water hides the mechanisms of the hand-painted wooden puppets, creating a wonderful effect.

The troupe presents some traditional Vietnamese tales, operating the puppets with amazing subtlety and humor. At times, whole chorus lines of puppets may appear, and there are some surprises along the way. Live musicians add the soundtrack.

Thang Long offers seven shows daily, with an additional show on Sunday mornings. It's best to pick up tickets at least a few hours in advance, since shows tend to sell out. If you're captivated by the performance, you might consider buying a retired puppet, available in the theater lobby (to our mind, their battle scars make them much more interesting than the copies you'll find for sale elsewhere).

7. Stay in a Twisted Fairy-Tale Hotel

Valley of Love (Vallée d’Amour) Park in Dalat - Vietnam

Valley of Love (Vallée d’Amour) Park in Dalat - Vietnam

Located in Vietnam's Central Highlands, Dalat is the perfect change of pace from the country's typical steamy climate. And if you're looking for a change of pace in lodging too, head straight for the Crazy House, a fantasy hotel that looks like architect Antoni Gaudi's work as interpreted by elves.

Originally known as Hang Nga Villa, the Crazy House is the pet project of architect Dang Viet Nga (daughter to a past president of Vietnam), who seeks to bring guests closer to nature with her eccentric design. The exterior resembles the gnarled roots of a tree; inside you might find windows inspired by spider webs in rooms with nary a flat surface. Some have undulating ceilings that feel like a cave; others are watched over by a sculpted kangaroo or tiger with glowing eyes. Quirky stairways look like stalks of bamboo or cross-sections of tree trunks.

Is Crazy House too, well, crazy for you? Try Ana Mandara Villas Dalat, a lovingly restored French colonial villa. Dalat was a favorite escape for French administrators; it was once known as "Little Paris," and comes complete with a radio tower masquerading as the Eiffel Tower. There are plenty of Art Deco colonial buildings too. Add in all the natural scenery, like hills and waterfalls, and you can see why Dalat is a favorite with Vietnamese honeymooners.

8. Go Night Fishing with a Squid Fleet

Night Fishing with a Squid Fleet in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Night Fishing with a Squid Fleet in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Phu Quoc Island, off Vietnam's southern coast, is renowned for its beaches. But if you get tired of working on the perfect tan, consider making like a local and going squid fishing. You've probably seen the squid fleet - it's those lights bobbing on the horizon at night. Fishermen attract squid with the lights and then hook them.

Most resorts offer a squid-fishing trip that includes boating out to enjoy the sunset and fishing as darkness sets in. You'll get to sample what you catch, either grilled or in "squid porridge," depending on the tour. Some providers to consider include Phu Quoc Island Explorer and Vietnam Tour Booking.

If you're into all things fishy, consider visiting one of the 100 or so fish sauce makers on Phu Quoc, where the odiferous culinary essential is aged in special wooden vats made from local trees. The island is famous for its sauce.

9. Get an Outfit Tailor-Made

Tailors’ Market, Hoi An, Vietnam

Tailors’ Market, Hoi An, Vietnam

Rumor has it that there are more tailors per capita in the historic town of Hoi An than anywhere else in the world. If you've got a few days, you can come away with a custom-made suit or a silk ao dai - the traditional women's outfit of a high-necked tunic over flowing trousers - for a very reasonable price.

Plenty of shops will beckon you with window displays, but choose carefully, bargain hard and don't put down any cash until the garment is delivered and you're perfectly satisfied. You might pay a bit more at spots like YalyCouture.com, but attention to detail and a higher level of quality are worth it. While some fine European fabrics are available at the more upmarket tailors, you might want to consider bringing fabric from home if you've got a suit in mind. Vietnamese suiting fabrics can be cheap, but the quality is far lower than the pricy European imports. Silk is another story, and many choices are available.

Allow for at least three fittings to get a garment that fits you properly. In the meantime, wander Hoi An's old shophouses, slurp some cao lau (the unique local noodles) and enjoy the colored lanterns that work their magic along the streets at night.

10. Make Peace with the War

Tours of Peace Vietnam

Tours of Peace Vietnam

Tours of Peace Vietnam Veterans is a nonprofit organization that organizes small-group trips for veterans and their family members to help them "heal and recover from the trauma of the Vietnam War." Participants are carefully selected after an application process, with a focus on needs, diversity and mutual support.

Trips are scheduled when appropriate candidates are assembled, and often coincide with significant holidays like Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Tours cover much of the lengthy geography of Vietnam, often in back-country environments, visiting areas of personal meaning to participants. Tours also include opportunities like sharing a meal with former Vietnamese soldiers and working on service projects. The organization stresses that there is a strong emotional component to the process.

TOP also offers advanced trips, with less military significance, designed for participants who have already been on one TOP trip. Previous participants often help mentor those on first-time trips. To apply, visit Palmvietnamtravel.com.

11. Take a Cooking Class

Vietnam Cooking Class

Vietnam Cooking Class

Chances are you'll be craving Vietnamese food once you get home from your trip. The exotic flavors, fresh ingredients and soul-satisfying soups are addictive. Why not learn how to whip up a few dishes during your trip?

You'll find cooking schools all over Vietnam, but some of the most established ones are in Ho Chi Minh City. The typical format is to visit a fresh market, examine the cornucopia of ingredients, and then head to the classroom for instruction, cooking and the best part: eating!

You'll find a polished presentation at Mai Home: The Saigon Culinary Arts Centre, with assistants standing by to whisk away garbage or light a misbehaving stove burner. Cyclo Resto gets kudos for its personable chef and small class size. And Saigon Cooking Class garners praise for its hands-on teaching and unique location (in an old opium factory).
