Bagan Shopping

Where to Shop and What to Buy in Bagan, Myanmar (Burma)

Souvenir shopping in Myanmar (Burma)

Souvenir shopping in Myanmar (Burma)

Because Bagan is an ancient city, it is not the place for modern shopping centres or spacious malls. While these major establishments may be absent, there are still many stores in Bagan that interested shoppers can visit. The quality of the products is good, and the prices are reasonable and shoppers can haggle for even lower prices. While clothes and other common items are sold in Bagan, most stores carry a wide selection of arts and crafts. Myanmar is a country of artisan families, and traditional skills are passed on from one generation to the next.

Of all the handicrafts in Myanmar, the most distinctive of all is lacquerware. It is the most widely produced and used; most households in the country use lacquerware as everyday objects. In central Myanmar, the centre of lacquerware manufacturing is Bagan. In Myinkaba Village alone, about 600 households manufacture lacquerware. In the past, Burmese royalty gave lacquer objects to foreign emissaries as gifts and today, visitors need not be an emissary to get their hands on quality lacquerware because many stores sell it in Bagan.

Being a UNESCO World Heritage place, Hoi An's old town is veritably bursting with history. Of course, you can walk through the streets for free, but if you would like to visit several attractions in one day perhaps it's best to buy a Multi-entrance ticket.

You buy them in any of the ticket offices that are in some travel agencies in the old town. With one ticket (about US$3) you can visit one of the three museums, one of the three 'old houses' and one of the three assembly halls. The money goes to the old town maintenance.

Hoi An Cooking Schools

Hoi An Cooking Schools, Vietnam

Hoi An Cooking Schools, Vietnam

Hoi An is a great place to learn how to cook real Vietnamese cuisine via half-day, full-day or evening courses. Plenty of restaurants offer their own cooking classes including the picturesque Red Bridge where you get the chance to learn directly from the professionals.

Many of the classes include a visit to the local fresh produce market as part of the course where you’ll get a chance to ask questions and perhaps even sample some exotic delights. With so many places to try your hand at conjuring up some delicious flavours, you’ll also be pleased to discover that most classes are offered at very reasonable rates.

Thuan Tinh Island Cooking Classes

Thuan Tinh is well-known as offering one of Vietnam's most distinctive cooking class experiences. Starting with a potter round a local fresh produce market based in downtown Hoi An, you are then whisked off on a boat to Thuan Tinh Island arriving swiftly at the organic vegetable village to gather more ingredients for your cooking day. The journey then continues via rowing boat through coconut groves to Ms. Hoa's house where you will create traditional Vietnamese delights.

Thuan Tinh is an eco-friendly island rich in tropical foliage making it a beautiful place to cook, relax and then enjoy the dishes you've created. The village cooking class frequently ranks amongst the top 10 tourist attractions in Hoi An as it is so much more than simply cooking as the unique journey to the island making it so much more special.

Thuan Tinh Island Highlights
Thuan Tinh Island gives visitors a chance to glimpse rural village life in a remote spot where locals catch their own fish and farm their own meat and vegetables - living a very self-sufficient life. On the Thuan Thinh cooking course you will make your first stop at the market in ancient Hoi An to pick up some locally grown herbs for use in your dishes, before joining a river boat ride to Thuan Tinh for a relaxing meander through what has been officially recognised as an ecological zone.

You'll then catch a row boat to meet Ms. Hoa and her family where a fresh snack and cool drink await before you join a cooking class in an open-air environment offering spectacular views of coconut trees and the river. You will learn how to cook a varied menu featuring favourites such as beef rice noodle soup infused with cinnamon, ginger and star anise and crispy Vietnamese crepes filled with pork, shrimp and bean sprouts and spring onion.

There will be plenty of time for you to enjoy sampling the dishes in addition to meeting some of the local villagers and perhaps having a turn on one of Vietnam's famous magic spinning tables.

Good to Know
The river boat ride from Hoi An to Thuan Thinh Island takes about 30 minutes and is very laid back, the time spent at the market prior will be brief, so if you want to have a proper look round then its best to make a separate visit on another day.

You can expect to make four different dishes on the cooking tour and there will be plenty of time to sit back, relax and enjoy what you have created. Fresh fruit drinks will be in constant supply during your tour. The cooking tour costs around $30 and includes hotel transfer, drinks, ingredients and all cooking tour costs plus a side trip to the eco island.

Everything you Need to Know about Sapa, Vietnam

Everything you Need to Know about Sapa, Vietnam

Sapa Northwest Mountains of Vietnam
Sapa Northwest Mountains of Vietnam

Sapa is a town in Lao Cai Province in Northwest Vietnam close to the Chinese border. It is located about 350km Northwest of Hanoi. Here is where one will find the Hoang Lien Son range of mountains, which includes Fan Si Pan - the country's highest peak.

This quiet Vietnamese town is home to a population which consists mostly of minority groups. There are five main ethnic groups in Sapa: the Hmong, Dao, Tay, Giay and Xa Pho. It is said that Sapa was first occupied by the first four groups, since the Vietnamese from the lowlands (better known as the Kinh) did not colonise the highest valleys.

It was only when the French arrived in Tonkin in the 19th century that Sapa was acknowledged and included on the national map. The site where Sapa would be became a key location for the French military as well as missionaries. It was also only in 1993 that Sapa became accessible to many, as this was the year its doors were opened to tourists.

Sapa Attractions

FansiPang Sapa, Vietnam
FansiPang Sapa, Vietnam

The most prominent attraction in the town of Sapa is Fan Si Pan, which is the highest mountain in Vietnam and it is only 19km from town. It may seem like a short distance, but the trek is not easy; the rough terrain and unpredictable weather present some difficulties. Tourists who are fit and have mountain climbing experience will enjoy this attraction the most, as the peak is accessible all year round. Technical climbing skills are not necessary, but endurance is a must.

Fan Si Pan can be found in the Hoang Lien National Park, which is an attraction in itself. The park covers a picturesque mountain landscape and several forests, and serves as the habitat for a diverse set of animals. Some species can only be found in Northwest Vietnam and are highly endangered. Nature lovers will truly appreciate this park.

Other attractions that are part of the Hoang Lien National Park include the Cat Cat Village and the Ta Phin Village and cave.

Sapa Restaurants/ Dining Scene

Restaurants in Sapa, Vietnam
Restaurants in Sapa, Vietnam

Tourists should head on over to P Cau May, which is the main street where all the restaurants and cafés are located. This is where one will find both Delta Restaurant and Gerbera Restaurant, two dining establishments frequented by visitors. Delta Restaurant is known for its reasonable prices, as well as traditional Vietnamese fare and Italian dishes. Those who crave for a taste of the West can visit Gerbera Restaurant and enjoy the rustic and charming décor.

Visitors with a sweet tooth will definitely love Baguette and Chocolate Café. This establishment is known as the ultimate destination for chocolate delights and the finest pastries in town. It also serves light meals to patrons. Enjoying a cup of hot chocolate here after a chilly day is truly a treat.
Other dining spots worth visiting include Le Gecko Restaurant, Nature Bar and Grill, and Rose Garden.

Sapa Nightlife

Nightlife in Sapa, Vietnam
Nightlife in Sapa, Vietnam

Sapa does not have a nightlife scene. There are restaurants and other establishments that sell beer and other drinks, but these close early. The only places that stay open beyond 22:00 are karaoke joints frequented by middle class Vietnamese travellers. There are no nightclubs or dance halls.

If there is one pub that every visitor should go to when in Sapa, it is the Red Dragon. The establishment is owned by an English expatriate who has lived in Vietnam for a decade. Red Dragon is a two-storey structure: the first floor is similar to an English tea room, while the second floor looks more like British-style pub and just like a true pub, this place boasts an impressive selection of bottled beer and good grub to accompany one's drink (or drinks) of choice, such as sausages (also known as bangers) and mash. Aside from the fine drinks, the fireplace in the joint will also keep patrons warm during the coldest of nights.

Sapa Shopping

Shopping in Sapa, Vietnam
Shopping in Sapa, Vietnam

Like most rural areas in Vietnam, there are no shopping malls in Sapa. Instead, there are many markets where locals buy (and sell) an assortment of goods. Tourists can also purchase souvenirs and other locally made products in these markets. The most popular of all Sapa markets is the Saturday market. This is made famous mostly because of the 'love market,' wherein teenagers from the tribes go to town to find a partner. Unfortunately, it has become significantly commercial in recent years.

The Bac Ha Market and Coc Ly Market are good alternatives for those who want to experience shopping the way locals do without being dampened by commercialization. Every Sunday, the different hill tribes that meet in the morning to sell their wares make up the Bac Ha Market. Unlike the Saturday market, this is more about local business than tourism. The market is open until noon, but the best time to visit between dawn and late morning. If you miss the Bac Ha Market, you can wait until Tuesday for the Coc Ly Market, which is smaller and less varied.

Sapa Activities

Sapa, Best place for trekking
Sapa, Best place for trekking

Trekking is the main activity in Sapa, and because Sapa is surrounded by mountains, this is to be expected. This is also the reason there are trekking maps available which show the walking trails and trekking routes around town. Most hotels in Sapa offer tourists guided half-day and day long treks, but the best places to inquire about these treks are the Cha Pa Garden, Auberge Hotel, Cat Cat View Hotel and Mountain View Hotel.

While it is possible to go hiking around Sapa on your own, it is better to have the assistance of a guide to guarantee a more enriching experience. When it comes to longer treks or overnight stays in the villages, the knowledge of a local will come in handy.

Tourists who want to learn something new can go on community-based tours to Sin Chai, a Hmong village. On most tours, overnight stays are arranged so people can learn about textiles, or tribal music and dance.

Sapa Information

Lao Chai village in the morning, Sapa, Vietnam
Lao Chai village in the morning, Sapa, Vietnam

One can take a train to reach Sapa, but it is a nine-hour ride from Hanoi to Lao Cai. Those who want less hassle should choose a night train. From Lao Cai, it will take about 45 minutes to an hour of road travel (either by minibus or taxi) to get to the desired destination. Travellers also have the option to drive from Hanoi (usually by motorcycle), but the direct route to the capital will take about 10 hours. Getting around Sapa is mostly done on foot.

The dry season begins from around January and lasts until June. The best time to visit is between March to May because January and February are the coldest and foggiest months of the year. There are times when temperature drops to almost freezing, and visitors find themselves blocked by a thick wall of fog. It is warm during June and August, though it often rains during this time, especially in the mornings. Tourists are advised to visit during the week, when the town is less crowded.

Before visiting, tourists should bring with them the necessary gear appropriate for the weather. Good trekking footwear or rubber boots are a must./.

Hoi An Shopping

Hoi An Shopping and What to Buy

Curiosity Shop in Hoi An, Vietnam
Curiosity Shop in Hoi An, Vietnam

For most people who visit Hoi An, the two main shopping allures are the Central or Riverside Market and the plethora of cheap tailors downtown.

With the sheer number of tailors available Hoi An is definitely a buyers' market and the visitor who doesn't bargain down the price of a suit or silk shirt is really missing out. Of course, many other items are on sale in Hoi An and the ancient charm of the town makes an afternoon or evening out shopping a delight.

Tailors speak both French and English - most stores are open from 08:00 to 21:00.

Hoi An Central Market

Hoi An Central Market, Vietnam
Hoi An Central Market, Vietnam

Sharpen your bargaining skills and head south east to Hoi An Central Market, one of Vietnam’s best, offering an unmissable shopping experience. Rich in the smell of fragrant herbs and spices and the vibrant colours of Vietnamese silk, delve deep and you are guaranteed a bargain. Prices tend to be more inflated at the stalls closest to the entrance so head right in for the best buys.

There is a vast array of foodstuff for sale including spices such as saffron and cinnamon which are superb purchases as are the exotic fresh fruit and vegetables on display. Due to its riverside location there is also a huge selection of fresh fish available.

The marketplace is renowned for its tailors who have a section of the market all to themselves. Fine silk tailoring is cheaper here than anywhere else in Hoi An with garment makers running up a dress, shirt, jacket or full suit usually within 24 hours. Souvenir and local handicraft hunters will also find plenty to browse through at the Central Market.

Hoi An Central Market Highlight

Vietnam traditional products, Hoi An
Vietnam traditional products, Hoi An

Resting on the banks of the Thu Bon River, bustling Hoi An Central Market is certainly worth a look for its authentic slice of Vietnamese life. The market is busy throughout the day with locals bargaining hard alongside tourists so its best to arrive first thing in the morning. The negotiating over fish usually starts around 07:00 as the fishermen drop their catch off and the market vendors and local buyers dive in to get the best fish. Be warned that it can get very messy, nevertheless it's certainly a sight not to be missed.

Inside the market there are also plenty of live ducks and chickens tied together and ready for sale alongside row upon row of Vietnamese cooking ingredients. The smell can get quite strong as the day heats up and the market will also become a lot busier and louder as the day progresses. If you want to avoid this, then head to the east side and the large shed type building which houses the tailors and all manner of Asian silk and textiles.

Good to Know

As a tourist browsing round Hoi An Central Market you can expect plenty of stall holders pushing their wares on you quite hard, the best course of action is to simply smile and continue on your way. When you do decide to make a purchase then remember that the first price you will be told will be over inflated, you should then offer around half and then work up to a price that you are both happy with. Be prepared to walk away and you might be surprised by the fair price you are then offered.

Opening Hours: daily from 06:30 and is best visited early starting with a walk by the docks to watch the fish arrive before you enter.
Location: Nguyen Hue and Tran Phu on the Thu Bon River.
Remarks: It's a good idea to wear closed shoes as the floor in the market can get damp and sticky, especially if you are visiting the fish section.

Siem Reap Shopping

Siem Reap Shopping and What to Buy

Shopping in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Shopping in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Being a tourist-related town, there are a great many shopping opportunities in Siem Reap and after hotels and tourism, shopping is big business. It’s not exactly 'shop ‘til you drop', but from cheap souvenirs to expensive gems and jewellery, and everything in between, you can find just about whatever you want here. There are three main local markets, three main night markets, and now two shopping centres and many 24-hour convenience stores. Khmer handicraft items exist in large quantities, and there are places that sell 'antiques'. While some things may be actual old antiques, one should be careful when purchasing such items.

People here have become very adept at making new things look old. Also, it is illegal to export Angkorian artifacts taken from ancient sites. In any event, you need to know what you are doing when dealing with antiques.

We have provided reviews from a selection of different shopping venues to hopefully save you time and money while shopping.

MOST POPULAR SHOPS IN SIEM REAP

Angkor Night Market

Angkor Night Market in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Angkor Night Market in Siem Reap, Cambodia

A good reason to visit Siem Reap is the Angkor Night Market. The first of its kind in Cambodia, Angkor Night Market was founded in 2007 with the prime mission to restore as well as preserve traditional Khmer handicrafts while alleviating poverty and improving the lives of Khmer people.

Luckily, locals and visitors have embraced this unique concept, and the original 100 stalls have now grown into a cluster of 250 or more over the years. Designed and constructed in a simple and traditional way, this night market is bounded by a Balinese themed garden and largely reflects the Khmer culture and heritage, with its well laid out thatched hut style stalls – all made using natural raw materials such as bamboo and wood.

Angkor Night Market Highlights

It’s truly a fun and experience to explore, dine, chill and shop after dark. The goods sold here, primarily by local communities as well as non-governmental organizations, encompass clothing, silk paintings, traditional handicraft items and wood and stone carvings. The biggest plus point is that majority of items you’ll come across here cannot be seen elsewhere.

If you’re a promoter of green living, then the "Angkor Recycled" within the night market will interest you, with an extensive range of bags, wallets, purses and pouches made from recycled materials. Likewise, to take back home some stunning pieces of Khmer art and unique household items, be sure to stop by the night market’s Khmer Boutique, boasting of a vast array of traditional images and statutory carved out in stone or embellished in metals like silver and brass. Another interesting shopping spot in the market is the Pich Reamker Shop, with merchandise including theatrical masks and headwear made using authentic, traditional methods.

If shopping is not your cup of tea and you just want to relax, then two of the market’s upscale dining options: Island Bar and Brick House Bar will not disappoint.

You can further relieve your weariness by undergoing a stress-busting foot massage at the fish spa next to the Island Bar. It will cost you only around $3 for a 20-minute long massage. Above all, to get a slice of the Cambodian history, don’t miss the 3D cinema here, depicting the plight of people during the Pol Pot era.

Opening Hours: From 16:00 till midnight.
Location: Conveniently located a few blocks away from the Old Market, off the Sivatha Blvd in Siem Reap.

Khmer Ceramic Centre

Khmer Ceramic Centre in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Khmer Ceramic Centre in Siem Reap, Cambodia

If you ever plan to visit Angkor Wat or Siem Reap, then definitely include Khmer Ceramic Centre in your to-do list. It not only provides a deep insight into the rich Khmer ceramic arts and culture that once flourished in the region from the early 9th century to the 15th century, but also allows you to take some fun souvenirs back home. Founded in 2006 as the National Centre for Khmer Ceramic Revival (NCKCR), the Khmer Ceramic Centre is a non-profit, non-government organization that strives for the resurgence of the Khmer pottery tradition by breathing in new life to this ancestral art.

Through this endeavour, the centre aims to mitigate poverty with free training for young deprived Cambodians to master this art, thus opening up an avenue for them to derive solid income. Aside from this, it buys the material needed for the packing of items from the local community in Siem Reap in order to support them. Since it is made up of ingredients such as palm leaves and sugar, this packing is eco-friendly and an excellent substitute for plastic bags.

Khmer Ceramic Centre Highlights

From the moment you step into the Khmer Ceramic Centre the first thing that you’ll come across is its boutique with its selection of top quality hand-made ceramic items reflecting Khmer art and culture, such as jars, cosmetic bottles, serving bowls, decorative bowls, tableware, oil burners and Khmer accessories. Products are developed using a blend of proven ancient Khmer ceramic production skills and latest techniques based on the research and studies on Khmer antiques. Developed in compliance with European Union regulations, each of the items produced here is as functional as beautiful.

Perhaps the most interesting thing regarding this centre is that it enables you to get a deeper understanding of traditional and contemporary Khmer ceramic art, including stoneware, raku and salt-glazed wares. Further, you can observe the steps involved in the making of Khmer ceramic items that involve conversion of natural raw materials such as Khmer earth and stone into attractive pieces of art. Best of all, the centre provides the unique opportunity to experience the thrill and intricacy drawn in the creation of ceramic artifacts. You can participate in any of the following workshops under the guidance of friendly, experienced staff: Potter Wheel Workshop, Khmer Raku Workshop and Khmer Ancient Workshop. Also, you will receive a free gift as part of the workshop.

Opening Hours: Daily from 08:00 to 19:30.
Location: The centre is situated on Siem Reap’s outskirts on the Charles de Gaulle Boulevard, along the road to Angkor Wat. The National Museum is nearby.
Address: Vithey Charles de Gaulle, Khum Slorkram, Siem Reap – Angkor.

Les Artisans d'Angkor

Les Artisans d'Angkor in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Les Artisans d'Angkor in Siem Reap, Cambodia

A visit to Artisans d’Angkor is a must to get a deep insight into the remarkable skilled workmanship of traditional handicrafts in Cambodia.

It was established in 1998 as a subsidiary of the Chantiers-Écoles de formation professionnelle – a professional training school sponsored by the National Cambodian Institution, the European Union and the French Foreign Ministry to impart free vocational training in traditional Angkorian art forms to the country’s illiterate young people between the ages of 18 and 25.

Founded as a three-year project, Artisans d’Angkor later became a limited company and is now an independent institution providing employment to over 1,000 dedicated craftsmen in the region while nurturing Khmer arts and crafts.

Through its network of 13 workshops spread across more than 10 villages in Siem Reap province, Artisans d’Angkor recruits 50 to 60 young apprentices from rural areas and trains them to gain authentic knowledge on Cambodian handicrafts as well as secure a sustainable career in their home villages.

Les Artisans d'Angkor

Artisans d’Angkor enjoys international recognition for the upscale artifacts that are the outcome of constant research, genuine materials and perfect colour as well as texture choices. Its workshops and boutiques serve as a platform to procure authentic information on traditional Khmer techniques deployed for lacquering and gilding, wood and stone carving and silk painting. For instance, stone carving is done here with sandstone that has been used by artisans since centuries to carve out stunning stone sculptures. Likewise, wood is carefully chosen to ensure that the end product will take after woodworks seen in ancient structures and pagoda embellishments.

For silk paintings that depict the religious beliefs and poetic implications, the artisans d’Angkor uses special kind of colours made using natural pigments. Upon applying this colour on the motif and finishing it with a paintbrush as well as India ink, a gloss whose key ingredient is a natural wax is applied on it to provide an appearance that is akin to murals found in prehistoric temples. Additionally, a specialty of these paintings is that they are primarily created by young deaf women who are part of the NGO Krousar Thmey – an organization that is committed to render assistance to deprived children in Cambodia.

Special attention and care is also given to develop such arts and craft items as bronze wares, traditional silver boxes, animal-shaped boxes, silver jewelry and silver boxes. Above all, don’t miss a visit to Angkor Silk Farm located about 12km west of Siem Reap to get a glimpse of the interesting procedures involved in the weaving of golden silk.

In addition to a main on-site boutique, Artisans d’Angkor also runs three duty-free boutiques within the premises of Siem Reap International Airport, Phnom Penh International Airport and Hong Kong Airport. Adjacent to Angkor Wat is another of its boutiques – Angkor Café, an air-conditioned facility carrying a selection of Khmer art and artifacts.
