It was also only in 1993 that Sapa became accessible to many, as this was the year its doors were opened to tourists.

Sapa does not have a nightlife scene. There are restaurants and other establishments that sell beer and other drinks, but these close early. The only places that stay open beyond 22:00 are karaoke joints frequented by middle class Vietnamese travellers. There are no nightclubs or dance halls.

If there is one pub that every visitor should go to when in Sapa, it is the Red Dragon. The establishment is owned by an English expatriate who has lived in Vietnam for a decade. Red Dragon is a two-storey structure: the first floor is similar to an English tea room, while the second floor looks more like British-style pub and just like a true pub, this place boasts an impressive selection of bottled beer and good grub to accompany one's drink (or drinks) of choice, such as sausages (also known as bangers) and mash. Aside from the fine drinks, the fireplace in the joint will also keep patrons warm during the coldest of nights.

Like most rural areas in Vietnam, there are no shopping malls in Sapa. Instead, there are many markets where locals buy (and sell) an assortment of goods. Tourists can also purchase souvenirs and other locally made products in these markets. The most popular of all Sapa markets is the Saturday market. This is made famous mostly because of the 'love market,' wherein teenagers from the tribes go to town to find a partner. Unfortunately, it has become significantly commercial in recent years.

The Bac Ha Market and Coc Ly Market are good alternatives for those who want to experience shopping the way locals do without being dampened by commercialization. Every Sunday, the different hill tribes that meet in the morning to sell their wares make up the Bac Ha Market. Unlike the Saturday market, this is more about local business than tourism. The market is open until noon, but the best time to visit between dawn and late morning. If you miss the Bac Ha Market, you can wait until Tuesday for the Coc Ly Market, which is smaller and less varied.

Trekking is the main activity in Sapa, and because Sapa is surrounded by mountains, this is to be expected. This is also the reason there are trekking maps available which show the walking trails and trekking routes around town. Most hotels in Sapa offer tourists guided half-day and day long treks, but the best places to inquire about these treks are the Cha Pa Garden, Auberge Hotel, Cat Cat View Hotel and Mountain View Hotel.

While it is possible to go hiking around Sapa on your own, it is better to have the assistance of a guide to guarantee a more enriching experience. When it comes to longer treks or overnight stays in the villages, the knowledge of a local will come in handy.

Tourists who want to learn something new can go on community-based tours to Sin Chai, a Hmong village. On most tours, overnight stays are arranged so people can learn about textiles, or tribal music and dance.

One can take a train to reach Sapa, but it is a nine-hour ride from Hanoi to Lao Cai. Those who want less hassle should choose a night train. From Lao Cai, it will take about 45 minutes to an hour of road travel (either by minibus or taxi) to get to the desired destination. Travellers also have the option to drive from Hanoi (usually by motorcycle), but the direct route to the capital will take about 10 hours. Getting around Sapa is mostly done on foot.

The dry season begins from around January and lasts until June. The best time to visit is between March to May because January and February are the coldest and foggiest months of the year. There are times when temperature drops to almost freezing, and visitors find themselves blocked by a thick wall of fog. It is warm during June and August, though it often rains during this time, especially in the mornings. Tourists are advised to visit during the week, when the town is less crowded.

Before visiting, tourists should bring with them the necessary gear appropriate for the weather. Good trekking footwear or rubber boots are a must./.

Souvenir and local handicraft hunters will also find plenty to browse through at the Central Market.

The market is busy throughout the day with locals bargaining hard alongside tourists so its best to arrive first thing in the morning. The negotiating over fish usually starts around 07:00 as the fishermen drop their catch off and the market vendors and local buyers dive in to get the best fish. Be warned that it can get very messy, nevertheless it's certainly a sight not to be missed.

Inside the market there are also plenty of live ducks and chickens tied together and ready for sale alongside row upon row of Vietnamese cooking ingredients. The smell can get quite strong as the day heats up and the market will also become a lot busier and louder as the day progresses. If you want to avoid this, then head to the east side and the large shed type building which houses the tailors and all manner of Asian silk and textiles.

Good to Know

As a tourist browsing round Hoi An Central Market you can expect plenty of stall holders pushing their wares on you quite hard, the best course of action is to simply smile and continue on your way. When you do decide to make a purchase then remember that the first price you will be told will be over inflated, you should then offer around half and then work up to a price that you are both happy with. Be prepared to walk away and you might be surprised by the fair price you are then offered.

A visit to Artisans d’Angkor is a must to get a deep insight into the remarkable skilled workmanship of traditional handicrafts in Cambodia.

It was established in 1998 as a subsidiary of the Chantiers-Écoles de formation professionnelle – a professional training school sponsored by the National Cambodian Institution, the European Union and the French Foreign Ministry to impart free vocational training in traditional Angkorian art forms to the country’s illiterate young people between the ages of 18 and 25.

Founded as a three-year project, Artisans d’Angkor later became a limited company and is now an independent institution providing employment to over 1,000 dedicated craftsmen in the region while nurturing Khmer arts and crafts.

Through its network of 13 workshops spread across more than 10 villages in Siem Reap province, Artisans d’Angkor recruits 50 to 60 young apprentices from rural areas and trains them to gain authentic knowledge on Cambodian handicrafts as well as secure a sustainable career in their home villages.

Artisans d’Angkor enjoys international recognition for the upscale artifacts that are the outcome of constant research, genuine materials and perfect colour as well as texture choices. Its workshops and boutiques serve as a platform to procure authentic information on traditional Khmer techniques deployed for lacquering and gilding, wood and stone carving and silk painting. For instance, stone carving is done here with sandstone that has been used by artisans since centuries to carve out stunning stone sculptures. LOCAL MARKETS IN SIEM REAP

As stated above, Siem Reap has three main Local markets. These are the Khmer style sprawling market places. They are all somewhat the same, but they are also somewhat different in the types of items they sell. Prices are always negotiable.

 

Old Market (Phsar Chas)

Old Market Siem Reap, Cambodia

 

This is the original Khmer market in Siem Reap, and has some of everything. Sells: souvenirs, silks, silver, jewellery, some antiques, clothes, shoes, household items, hardware, and fresh food. Also, Khmer food stalls, and sewing repair.

Location: Downtown near the Siem Reap River.

 

Central Market (Phsar Kandal)

Central Market Siem Reap, Cambodia

 

Sells: souvenirs, clothes, luggage, gems, silver, paintings, etc. Also, Khmer food stalls/restaurants.

Location: Downtown on Sivatha Blvd.

 

Phsar Leu

Phsar Leu Market in Siem Reap, Cambodia

 

This is a huge market where most local people go to buy. They sell food, clothes, shoes, tools, electronics, house wares, and almost anything else you would want.

Location: Hwy. No. 6 east of town.

 

Phsar Samaki

A somewhat smaller version of Phsar Leu. It is also on Highway No. 6, but closer to town.

Location: east of town on National Hwy. No. 6, on the way to Phsar Leu.

 

SIEM REAP NIGHT MARKETS

 

Noon Night Market

Noon Night Market in Siem Reap, Cambodia

 

This is the second oldest, and second largest of the night markets. They also sell the same type of souvenir items.

Location: Off of Sivatha Blvd. on same street to Angkor Night Market.

 

Siem Reap Night Market

The newest and smallest night market, it offers mostly souvenirs, but also has antiques.

SHOPPING CENTRES IN SIEM REAP

Siem Reap now boasts 2 somewhat full-fledged shopping centers. They are not shopping centers as one would find in developed countries, but at least they are shopping centers.

 

Angkor Trade Center

Angkor Trade Center in Siem Reap, Cambodia

 

This is the first real shopping center in Siem Reap. On the 1st floor is a supermarket, Swensen’s Ice Cream, Pizza Company, and other shops. 2nd floor: clothes, shoes, electronics, etc. 3rd floor: games arcade.

Location: Near Old Market, on the river.

 

Lucky Mall

Lucky Mall in Siem Reap, Cambodia

 

Being the newest shopping center, it should be the biggest and best, but there are relatively few shops here. It does have a Lucky Burger and a very good Lucky Supermarket. Can be very crowded in the evening and on weekends.

Angkor Gallery

Angkor Gallery Shop in Siem Reap, Cambodia

 

This is now the gallery for the Cambodian artist know as Asasax. Paintings by the artist are on display and for sale in the small gallery. The style of his art ranges from realism to abstract, to some pieces that are almost cartoon like. The major themes of his work involve Angkor temples, Khmer faces, and elephants. He works in a variety of media including oils, water color, and collage.

Art Deli

Art Deli in Siem Reap, Cambodia

 

This has to be one of the most unique art galleries in Siem Reap. Located in a 2-storey shop-house, it is very artsy and funky. At any one time, there are approximately 10 Cambodian artists displaying their works representing a variety of eclectic styles and techniques from detailed pen and ink drawings to abstract art and photography. The soft jazz music floats through the venue, while you enjoy the artwork, and sip your juice, coffee, beer or cocktails.

Art Work Gallery

Original works by the Cambodian artist S. Kheang are on display and for sale in this gallery. A range of media are used in his works, including acrylic, pastels, oil colors, Saa paper, canvas, silk, etc., and the works reflect the life experience of the artist growing up in Cambodia. They also do T-shirt design.

Angkor Candles

The first thing you notice when you walk into this small shop is the beautiful aroma of the scented candles. All candles are handmade, and are made with fragrances such as jasmine and vanilla.

Asia Craft Center

A rather pricey retail outlet selling products from many Asian countries. Lots of carpets, tapestries, and statues in somewhat ostentatious displays. They are aimed more at the upscale market.

Bloom Cambodia

Bloom Cambodia Siem Reap

 

They make unique handbags, and other products, out of completely recycled materials. Their products are actually a protest against waste, and the “throw away” culture. They believe in paying workers a fair wage, while helping the planet. Stop by if you are interested in helping the environment.

Blue Apsara Book Shop

For used books in a variety of languages; this is the place. They have about 5,000 fiction and non-fiction books in English, French, German and Dutch. Its a good place to get used travel guides, especially for Southeast Asia. They buy, sell, and trade.

New Apsara Market

Conveniently located on Wat Bo Road, it is the only market on the east side of the Siem Reap River that has a good selection of imported groceries. They cater to travelers and expats, and its a good place to stop in and stock up on canned goods, snacks, daily necessities, and drinks.

Paris Sete

A small shop selling a variety of items. Old photos, bronzes, opium pipes, flags, postcards, and refrigerator magnets are just a few of the types of things for sale here. An interesting place to check out.

Rajana

Run by a local non-profit association, it is a training project producing fair-trade products that blend contemporary designs with traditional Cambodian crafts. They sell quality handicraft products, and enable many village families to support themselves.

Rehab Craft

Operated by a non-profit organization, purchases here directly benefit employment programs for Cambodians with disabilities. They sell silks, carvings, and a wide variety of quality handicraft products at fair-trade prices.

Samatoa

In Siem Reap for about 7 years, this shop specializes in tailor-made natural silk clothes, including suits, dresses, blouses and hats. Accessories also available.

For expats and tourists alike, up until the a couple of years ago, this was the only place to shop. With a large selection of imported food and groceries, it is still the best place to shop for international items that even the supermarket doesn’t stock. Tourists come by the busload.
